It's Not As Bad As You Think...It's Worse

Everyday the news about Japan gets a little more terrible. As if the earthquake wasn't bad enough, the tsunami that followed devastated the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people. Its so sad to think of all the mayhem the wave caused. But just when I started to think the people would recover, news of an impending nuclear meltdown circle the airwaves.

The risk of death due to an explosion is horrible. But what's worse is the long-term effects of radiation poisoning. The initial blast is only the beginning. Radiation will poison flora an fauna. As the radiation works its way up the food chain, cancer will become more of an issue. Both men an women could face reproductive and a host of other as yet unforeseen problems.

But, just as I think things can get worse...ignorance blankets the airwaves. These talking ass-hats begin diagnosing the economic repercussions of this disaster in the most insensitive manner imaginable. A media outlet that shall remain nameless framed the disaster not in terms of lives lost or ruined, homes destroyed or infrastructure damaged, but in terms of the cost to the American populous because of a Toyota Prius shortage. Did I hear right? Is someone comparing shortage of Mickey Mouse cars to a massive earthquake, devastating tsunami and nuclear meltdown? Never mind the loss of thousands of lives; let's get upset because Muffy has to wait a little longer for her Prius.

All of this while Haiti is still in shambles. Where's the outrage? Oh, I'm sorry that Haiti's economy isn't as crucial to globe as Japan's. I am sorry that they don't export anything valuable enough that would drive us Prius-driving, Gucci bag-totting, Wii-playing ass-hats to give a crap. I am sorry that the loss of human life is not enough on its own to keep our national attention for longer than a minute.

Don't get me started on New Orleans. The point of this rant is to remind myself that we don't care about anything unless we are personally affected. Don't pretend to care about the Japanese people or the Haitian people or even Louisiana if all we care about is our cars, fuel costs or flat screen TVs. I love being human, but sometimes we suck.

Pray for Japan, Haiti, Australia, Lebanon, Egypt and all the people of the world struggling right now.

There are so many people with a genuine concern. People who continue to raise funds to support relief efforts and rebuilding. However this is oftentimes overshadowed by the ugly. The "what's in this for me" ugly. Its disgusting how often disaster is measured not by how many lives are lost or affected but by how much financial loss there is! I know that this is a free economy but I hate it when the focus is on the stock market and "oh my gosh how much money will I lose because of this" unfortunately cash is king in this world.

Yes I agree with your observations especially on Louisiana (America's own).My heart continues to bleed for Haiti and it is hard not to believe that it is an international conspiracy orchestrated by France the former colonial masters. 200.000 people dead (at least)devastation beyond measure, followed by cholera, preceded by hurricanes, landslides and insults, rapes and human neglect. Some of those who are running to the side of Japan, New Zeeland and Pakistan are some of the same ones who pledged to help Haiti and didn't.
Then there is talk of intervention in Libya. Saudi Arabia has banned all protests and are shooting protesters on sight ...invade them overthrow the Sheikhs in Bharain etc. This is a big interational joke reminicent of Cuba, Panama, Chile, Nicaragua, Mosambique and others where the candidates who were supported turned against the intel. establishment. ''If you do not learn from history you are doomed to repeat it.' What a shame

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate your input. You are both right. There is great compassion out there. But sometimes that compassion is overshadowed by ignorance.

How Come?and since when!!

Since when the UN is concerned with the 'welfare' of Libyans.Does the UN Charter allow it to intervene in the internal affairs of countries. Does teritorial integrity only apply to those who can defend themselves? Gadaffi was in control for forty two years and suddenly US an the UN are so concerned, intervening to 'protect' them from the Colonel.
The US is prepared to enter a third war despite the fact that the economy is shaky. Is it 'oil' is it 'politics'.

How come Rawanda and Burundi chopped each other for years (over800,000 dead)and no one intervened.
How come the Sudanese slaughted each other for so long and no invasion, even though the US acknowledged the .genocide'.
Is the lives of a Libyans more vital than any one else.

There is evidence that countries have insulted the UN by ignoring the so called 'resolutions' for years and... no invasion.
How come France and Britain former colonial powers and Canada!!are so involved in attacking a 'defenseless' country by testing their superior artillary.
How come memory of 'reasons' for Iraq invasion is so short.
How come when the Chinese buldozed their own citizens at Tiennemen square ...no one intervened. Saudi Araiba banned protests and sent troops to shoot protesters in Bahrain...no one intervened.

Is the world getting barbaric? Is there on other way to solve problems but by 'military action'? How many wars are we going to be involved in?

How come? since when!

And what about Zimbabwe. Is Robert Mugabe a legitimate leader...how many of his people were killed? Then there is Ivory Coast. We hear about 'intervention to prevent humanitarian disaster'.If anyone deserve intervention on a large scale it is Haiti. Does anyone in the so called international community care about the suffering in Haiti......or Darfur are those lives not important.
The same France who is so willing to drop bombs to protect the 'suffering Libyan rebels' could have used some of the money to help their former colony... but no what does Haiti have?

What an burning international disgrace!!
